The United Republic of Tanzania

Tanzania is known for its political stability and calm, housing over 120 tribes and a mixture of religions and languages. The country has held general elections every five years, without fail. Jakaya Kikwete is serving as the country’s president and has been in office since 2005.

The country is situated on the coast of East Africa, bordered by Kenya to the north, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, and Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south.

Tanzania was formed in April 26, 1964, when Tanganyika (the mainland) and the Zanzibar Islands formed a union. Previously, both parts had been under British Rule. Tanganyika had been independent since 1961 and Zanzibar since 1963. The country is divided into 26 regions or “mkoa”, 21 on the mainland and 5 in Zanzibar.

Arusha

Arusha is situated in northern Tanzania. The  city has a population of approximately 400 000 people. Located below Mount Meru the city enjoys a temperate climate throughout the year thanks to its altitude (about 1300m).

The city is close to for example Serengeti National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro, and Arusha National Park, and is the starting point of many safari or cultural tours.

Arusha is also a major international diplomatic hub. The city hosts and is regarded as the de facto capital of the East African Community.

Climate

Despite its proximity to the equator, Arusha’s location on the southern slopes of Mount Meru keeps temperatures relatively low. Cool dry air is prevalent for much of the year. Average high and low in April is 25/14 degrees Celsius.
